1. Try factoring it out. The negative sign in the middle indicates that one factor will have a + sign and the other will have a - sign. All other combinations result in a + sign in the middle when multiplied together; i.e., +X+=+, -X-=+ also. Only +X- = - .
2. ( ?x + ?y )( ? x - ? y ) There should be an example in your algebra book. Go find back in the book to find it and follow what it says to do to each factor to get the result shown that you are supposed to factor out. What do they want you to find? What are the words with the problem? The rules are always the same in algebra.
3. What number times what number will give you the result found in that math problem? what times what will give you 12 and also 4, and no mixed middle factors such as x squared y or x y squared? 12X1, 6X2, or 3X4?
4. Remember, in factoring out, you will multiply the first factor on the left side with the first factor on the right side, then the first factor on the left side with the second factor on the right side, following the + and - sign multiplication rules.
Then you will multiply the second factor on the left side with the first factor on the right side, and last of all you will multiply the second factor on the left side with the second factor on the right side.
5. You will now have a string of results which you must add together, like with like. i.e., add all the xs together, all the ys, and all the xys. Add the numbers in front of them that you divided out in #3, above.
With algebra, there is always a certain amount of guesswork involved in these types of problems until you hit on the right combination. That is the work you probably don't want to do yourself, which is why you asked for help. You have to do the work to get the reward of discovering which one it is. Many people dislike this uncertainty. You are not the only one who feels insecure. Try anyway.
6. In this particular case, I would think that one side of the factor will not have any xs in it, but just a number sign and the other will have an x .
7. Remember, x + x = x squared. 2x + x = 2x squared.
- 4y - y squared = -4y cubed. Do these clues help you?
CLUE: (X+Y)(X-Y)=X2 -XY +XY -Y2
The positive sign XY and negative sign XY cancel each other out so you have a net result of X2 - Y2.
8. Once you have the correct factors figured out, you can then solve removed the parentheses from one of the factor sets, and solve for x or y using one factor at a time.
For example, x + y = 0
Adding -y to each side to solve for x gives you
x = -y
Likewise, you get the reverse if you solve for y. Y = -x. You usually get a set of possible answers for x or y, both negative and positive, after doing both of the factored possibilities in the brackets, so you list them: x - 0, -3. y = -1, 3
or: 4 + y = 0 Add -4 to each side, and you get y= -4
9. Finally, substitute in the values you got for x and y into the original equation to find out what x and y in it equal, and if you are correct, you will know it.
You obviously have some middle terms cancelling each other out, which is often usual when one sign is + and the other factor sign is -.
I am pretty rusty on all this, but re-reading the chapters before this problem came up will refresh your memory on how to solve it, as well as reviewing your correct answers on previous problems.

exciting concern! nicely 7*2 = 14 legs for the females. 7*7 = 40 9 (the form of cats) * 4 = 196 cat legs There are 196 extra legs for the little cats. There are 406 legs assuming that between the females is illegally using the bus (or that no bus driving force is on the bus). There are 408 inclusive of the bus driving force.

isn't that one number? where's the equal sign or more and less or something in between to show the differences?
