Plot:
Prince Hamlet's uncle, Claudius, has inherited the throne and taken the former king’s wife (Prince Hamlet’s mother), Gertrude, as his own wife. [An] apparition appears... and speaks to Hamlet, revealing to him that his father was murdered by Claudius. After commanding Hamlet to avenge his father’s death, the ghost disappears...
I contend here that Hamlet:
1. Procrastinated every time an action was required that would commit him to a position in life
2. He lacked committment to any true purpose
3. Procrastination killed him and a lack of true committment destroyed the value of his life
4. Hamlet is such a coward he takes orders from a ghost
Scenes demonstrating Procrastination:
1. However, in a secretly overseen meeting between the two suspected lovers, there is no evidence that Hamlet loves Ophelia; to the contrary, he orders her away to a nunnery. [No real committment to preserve anyone's life.]
2. Hamlet goes to avenge his father. He is poised to kill when he finds Claudius in prayer but concludes that killing him now would result in his soul’s passage to heaven – an inappropriate fate for one so evil. However, when he leaves, Claudius reveals that he had not been praying in a very pious manner. [No real committment. Feigning piety himself.]
3. Fearing for his own safety, Claudius deports Hamlet to England along with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who, unbeknownst to Hamlet, carry a request for the arrangement of his death. Later...Hamlet sends word that he has returned to Denmark after his ship was attacked by pirates on the way to England. [never his intention to go]
4 Hamlet, then is cut by his own blade. With his dying breath, he reveals the king’s plot to kill Hamlet. [procrastination killed him] Hamlet manages to kill Claudius before he too succumbs to the fatal poison.[procrastinates dying,no real committment, a mythical ending that appears to make it all better.]
Moral: A Hamlet is a Ham who Lets somebody else do him justice.

Seriously, you should "hear" the play via an audio or CD device. It's hard to read Shakespeare for the first time. It was written to be heard, and the words and cadence make "heavy" reading. Good luck!! BTW, "Hamlet" is my favorite.

He devised a test to really see if claudius is the real killer seeing that he didn't want to kill an innocent man.... he decided to conduct a play illustrating what he knew happened and to see claudius's reaction....
