Text speak is an example of cultural illiteracy. While there are those who would attempt to force all communication into the most compact form possible, this eliminates all true expression of emotion, creativity, and individualism. A random walk across the keyboard is more likely to generate gibberish than communication. Certain keys are indispensable, like the punctuation keys, which add flavour and order. Other keys are confusing, when taken out of context, like "#" and "^".
Mobile phones, in and of themselves, are irritating. When I am in pleasant conversation with a friend, I am annoyed when the @#$%^&* thing rings (please pardon my explicative), and someone actually interrupts an interesting conversation to sell me new siding or insurance..., which probably explains why I have discontinued my cell phone service.
I wish we could return to an earlier time, when conversation flourished, and the traditional "letter" was constructed around proper grammer, intelligent thought, and polite conversation, a time when explicatives were considered in poor taste, and avoided. I am ashamed by my own lack of self control in this matter, but I must plead that my use of the explicative was directed at a worthy target, without malice or violent intent, and expressed a feeling to which I am entitled, and is shared by a few others.
I do hope that your nerves have been soothed, at this point, and that you realize there are at least a few others out here in cyberspace who would continue the quest for meaningful conversation using verbal and written techniques of earlier years. Your protest is appreciated and applauded.

Aha! We have, at last found an ally.
Add to this all the idiotic questions, the stupid answers and the statements rather than answers and we might just be getting somewhere.
It's a little bit like Citizens Band Radio compared with Amateur Radio - a world of difference!

I'm with you. It bothers me enough that I still spell and use puncuation in my text messages. It would be tough teaching english in a high school where even the kids who speak English as their first language can't spell, puncuate or write anything halfway intelligent.

I am waiting for the day that schools accept this kind of stuff in essays. Yes, it gets on my nerves too. And anyone who thinks it makes them clever really needs to grow up and get a life.

I'm delighted to see so many agree with me. As Phil H says, the standard of English used on here is so poor it makes one question the educational system. Surely not everyone who appears here can be as thick as they seem?

To be honest, half the questions and answers on here use such a poor level of grammar, spelling and punctuation that you have to question the education system here!
