A strange thing happened today. As I worked in the kitchen, a glass bowl exploded above the cabinets. Help?

Had never witnessed anything like this before; the bowl was filled with artificial fruit, but was quite heavy; Glass was everywhere and, only for the grace of God, there was no one directly in its path. Would temperature change have anything to do with it?

Something similar happened to me about two weeks ago. I was baking cookies and got out a glass container of brown sugar putting it on the countertop. It literally exploded in right in front of me for no apparent reason. The only thing I could think of as a cause was that the oven backs up into the pantry where the brown sugar is kept and I had been pre-heating it to bake the cookies. The pantry might have been hot and the granite was cold causing the canister to explode. I really did not see any cracks on it, however. I think the temperature might have played a part in your explosion as well. I was lucky, too, no one got hurt.

An abrupt change in temperature will cause glass to break. Recently, one of my sons poured hot coffee into a glass bowl and it shattered. Taking a hot glass bowl out of the oven and setting it on a cold counter can cause it to shatter. Do you have any idea how the bowl could have been heated? Was it on a shelf above a light or something like that? Very curious.

Maybe the stress in the dish had finally reached a breaking point. Or the temperature caused the fruit to expand causing the break.
