Venus fly traps like a lot of humidity and moisture. They grow in a swampy area in NC. When you buy one you'll notice that it's in a covered pot. Try to put it in a terrarium and you'll have to "feed" it occasionally. Don't use hamburger, it's not it's natural food. You can buy small crickets or feed it flies that died of natural causes (not because of pesticides). Also the soil needs to stay damp, but not be flooded because the plants will "drown." Try not to use tap water to water these plants. They very sensitive, that's why they're not found all over the world. Also make sure that if you're not going to use a terrarium, keep it in a larger tray filled with water. You can set the pot on small rocks to keep it out of the water but to help increase it's humidity.

The most important thing is that these are not "house" plants. They're swamp plants, so try to mimic swampy conditions to ensure the success of your plant.

Never fertilize your soil. Swampy areas are not well fertilized. They're usually in zero nitrogen soil and that's why they need to "eat" flies.

They actively grow from about May to October. After that you might notice the plant looks like it's starting to die. That's okay, it's only going dormant for the winter. Just stop watering it and allow it to go dormant. Then in May, start watering it again and "feeding" it the flies.

Have fun!

The problem with these fun plants is they need to be fed. I bought day old crickets and fed them with tweezers. Remember they are a bulb and they will go dormant so even when the plant seems to have "died" it will still need to be watered It may or may not come back the next year (i had one that came back and one that didn't). Keep it by a window as much as possible. Follow the directions that come with the plant.

I had one as a kid. We never watered it enough so I put it in my terrarium and fed it bugs everyday. It lived about a year or so which is darned good in my brown thumb house.

They are AWESOME plants . . . words of wisdom/caution here though: Keep it well watered, and use DISTILLED water only . . . you must never let it dry out, the first time you do, the plant will be weakened, tips and leaves will turn black, and if severe enough, the plant will perish.
