Plus side - only one injection every 12 weeks. After 6 months women begin to loose their periods, by a year 60-70% have no periods. May help PMT.

Minus side- 3-6 months of dysfunctional (erratic) bleeding. May miss periods or have extras or dribble for long periods. Can't be reversed has to wear off. May increase osteoporosis especially in young women. May increase PMT.

I have been on the injection for 2 years i didn't have any side effects, didn't gain weight and didn't have a period at all!
I was worried at first that if i didn't get on with it i was stuck for the 12 weeks but i decided that it was worth a try and I'm pleased i did.
I go every 11 weeks for a new injection and it is effective for 12 weeks but so you are covered with contraception and in case you cant make an appointment in time etc the nurse recommends you go at 11 week intervals.

I would recommend the injection i am pleased with it.
Good luck

My biggest reservation about the injection would be that once you've had it then you've had it and there is no way to stop it if you do start having side effects, which all really depend on your constitution. Where as with things like the pill, implants or the coil you can stop at any time, i personally have a coil and think it's great as it lasts for 5 years and only needs to be checked once a year and no i don't have periods

Iv'e had the contraceptive injection a couple of times. You get it topped up every three months, and it stops your periods totally. I must be honest and say it did make me put quite a lot of weight on the second time around, which is why I no longer have it. It is a very good idea, especially considering you don't have to remember to take a pill etc, but it can make you quite irritable too.

Hope this helps!

I had this after having my 3rd child. I bled constantly for 6 months and only had 2 days per month blood free!! It was a nightmare, I was all sore and raw down there. I had to attend the hospital and they put me on a course of the pill for a month which then broke the cycle. Phew, I was then back to normal. I NEVER took that injection again. Also it plays with your moods big time!!

I was on Depo for about 18 months after I had my last baby. There are loads of side affects, but you might not get any. The one I had was depression ( was on anti depressants drugs), very moody, my skin was very spotty (pimples). I also had insomnia. No sex drive at all.
On the plus side I didn't have any bleeding at all, and didn't get pregnant.
Google 'depo side affects' and you will see what I mean about there being side affects.
I'm now back on the pill as I couldn't go on being so depressed.

umm.. heard alot of negative press about the injection. i would seriously try to get as much info as possible BEFORE making your decision...

actually, ive never heard anything positive about it, other than, not needing to worry about contraception for 3 amount of months, and low failure rate of 0.3% (when used correctly)

The most common side effect is excess weight gain.. there are a number of side effect you COULD get, but once its in your system there is no way of getting it out, other than it just running its course!!

It is not a 'true' period but you have bleeding.

Read up about it, and have a chat to your nurse before deciding.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depo_Provera

Yes there are many, loss of bone density, irregular bleeding, weight gain, mood swings to name a few. I had it for 2 years and was then advised by my dr to stop due to the loss of bone density. Whilst on it for those two years i put on 4stone , had bad skin and was moody! I had constant bleeding for months then no bleeding at all, then spotting it was a nightmare!! The jab lasts for 12wks so you have to go bk every 3months for the jab to cover you. I really wouldnt advise it though hun, i dont know anyone whos had a positive experience on it!!

Please reconsider! I beld for 9 weeks out of the 12 it lasted, very heavily too. I gained weight. I have started the contraceptive pill 7 months after my shot, (about 4 months after it ran out) to regulate my cycles, as we wish to start trying for a family. It can take many women years for this contraception to leave the body, and in some it causes them to stop ovulating even after you stop contraception. Please reconsider, this is my advice. I completely regret it!

Oh my yes! I had the shot 3 years ago and it caused me to bleed for 4 months straight. Other side affects are bone loss density. I would try someother method, it's really not hyped up as to what they say it is.
