It extends their life. At cooler temperatures the molecules slow down and also slows down the charge decay. At least that is the theory. I don't know if it actually works.
Maybe that should be a Mythbusters episode.

Some years ago someone started a rumour that putting batteries in the fridge prolonged their life.
Just like the rumour about keeping your coffee in the fridge - which is totally false.
I doubt it helps batteries either :0)

All batteries have a shelf life...they slowly lose charge even if not being used...putting them in the fridge does two things to extend the shelf life....it slows down the chemical reaction...and it is also a very dry atmosphere, humidity in the air causes discharge

They think the cold will preserve the batteries. However if its been used before it will make it like the battery is drained of power. Myself I'd store at room temperature

It makes them take a chemical reaction . Once they cool and you take them out they start to heat up making the chemicals react just like you can heat up a battery over heat and you will get a few more minuets out of it . That's why allot of car battery's die in the winter they don't have the heat to help them with the chemical reaction .If you put you car battery in a warm place it will then start your car

that doesn't make sense. car batteries are less effective in the cold.
camera film goes in fridges, not batteries.

They say it makes them last longer so you won't have to change batteries so often. It will also save you money.
