Freedom is an age old philosophical delemina that is centered around free-will vs determinism.

Under determinism, it is thought that all our actions are pre-determined by our enviroment ie our parents, our society, our ingrained belief system.

Free-will says that we have the ability to chose what our future holds by the decisions that we make, whether they are correct or not.

Freedom is the part of the result of free-will but it also includes being allowed by society to do the things that we choose without fear of retaliation. With this being said, even in our country we do not have complete freedom of action---(for instance, we cannot yell out in a theater "fire" just because we can to). One way of describing freedom in this country is that our freedom extends from ourselve to the realm of the freedom of the next person.

Freedom is a state of mind. It is like owning a gun and never shooting anyone i.e. to have but not to hold. For everyone, freedom is like living in a cage. For some people, they do not test their freedom so their cage is very big... for other people who test the limits of their freedom they find their cage very small so the question is... is your cage too big or too small

"What is freedom? Freedom is the right to choose: the right to create for yourself the alternatives of choice. Without the possibility of choice and the exercise of choice a man is not a man but a member, an instrument, a thing."
— Archibald MacLeish

"The purpose of freedom is to create it for others."
— Bernard Malamud

"We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home."
— Edward R. Murrow

Freedom is knowing there are no restrictions. I remember the words, "You can lock me up, but my mind is free." Like someone said, it is the opposite of oppression. And oppression keeps you limited. But when your free, there is no limit to hold you back. (Except the law of good and bad; Common sense.)
