Since I am not in a real rush (2 days to get there) can anyone suggest some sites to see off of the beaten' track (off the I-95 corridor but not including Washington, DC or Baltimore, MD). I will be traveling with my wife and my 14 and 9 yr old sons. Any ideas on points of interest? Thanks.

The last time I did that trip , I went over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel , down the Outer Banks of NC
Took the ferry from Hatteras To Ocracoke -cool place to be may be worth spending the night
Then the Ferry from Ocracoke to the mainland- thru USMC Camp Lejune and onto Myrtle Beach and Charleston SC
Then back to I-95 just north of the SC/GA state line
A nice relaxing way to go . An amazing amount of history enroute.

Consider taking an alternate route, say I 81. The ride is alittle longer, but the scenery and off the road places to see are spectacular. Get off 81 in Hagerstown Md, and go to Sharpsburg MD, See Antietam Battlefield and other such historical places along the way.

When you get just north of Savannah, Georgia, there is a fantastic view of an inlet, estuary, whatever it's called. There are naval bases and beaches all along your route, why not inquire about a tour at one? You can see your tax dollars at work, and if you go to one of the southern ones, your kids might learn about scuba diving and who knows what else. The point is, it's usually free, not too long, and you all might get just a little prouder to be Americans.

A great place to stop is South-of-the-Border on the NC/SC border. It's a total tourist trap, but it's still fun, and is featured in the film "Forces of Nature" starring Sandra Bullock.
