Have to go with Larry Bird on this one.

Mikan, as a player, was similar to Shaq, in that he had great skill around the basket, and no one else in the league could physically deal with him.

Mikan was also the reason the NBA succeeded while other professional basketball leagues prior to that had failed. The NBA succeeded because it was able to secure the services of a major star. In the early days of the NBA, marquees would often read "George Mikan vs the Knicks" rather than "Lakers vs. Knicks".

Jerry West was a great, great player as well, and his nickname of Mr. Clutch, given to him by legendary announcer Chick Hearn, was well earned.

Rick Barry was actually similar to Bird...other than 1975, when he led the Warriors to an incredible championship run, his best years were in the late 60s NBA and the early 70s ABA. No ESPN in those days.

Maravich was unbelievable to watch, and he put up some crazy numbers. He could certainly do things with a basketball that no one's been able to do before or since.

But with Bird, you have a guy who was always the best player on the court from the moment he entered the NBA...and he and Magic saved the NBA after the drug-infested scandals of the late '70s.

Bird was probably the most feared white player in NBA history.

Pistol Pete was the first big name Million Dollar player but he couldn't win a championship because he had no defense... Rick Barry and Jerry West are also some of the top names you have to include..... Larry Legend though played against the greatest and held his own if not doing some damage himself. I would have to agree the Larry is at the top of the list. These new era players don't have the defensive skills to be on the level with Bird or anyone else.

P.S. He would have had more rings if Len Bias would have come to the league.
