that's it, he is afraid to look silly because he feels awkward and out of timing (maybe he is a bit shy) just remain casually friendly, and he will be comfortable and finds his right timing approaching you.

hey i'm a guy so i shall give you some advice. By good conversation did you talk for a while (over 10 minutes) without sudden long pauses(conversation flowed). About blanking you, he either had soemthing on his mind that was suronding him, or he wants to make the next move as someone said above. If he doesn't start talking to you in the hallway then just say hi to him and try to get him imersed into a convo. But don't force the conversation, otherwise he's going to know your interested in him.

maybe he feels silly or is afraid of criticism.
maybe he wants to take the next step but is afraid to.

you could try being friendly but not too friendly
(don't chase him for three miles just to say hi, but if he looks at you, smile)

I think it´s a fear reaction. He doesn´t want to start something he´s afraid of and give you false expectations.
