Go into My Computer and find the icon for the drive
Right click on the icon and select Properties
The Pie Chart in the middle of the Properties Window will show you how much space is left.

Plug in external hard drive and turn on. Wait 30 seconds.
1. right click "My Computer" on desktop and Select "manage"
2. You are now in Computer Management.
3. Open "Storage" and click "Disk management"
