I'm trying to choose a 'spot on' treatment for my guinea pigs but different brands use differnt terms. Confusing!

It's ok, we don't have worms. As I said, I'm looking for a spot-on treatment, which is a preventative. Same as the stuff you buy for cats and dogs.

Our vet doesn't believe in preventative medicine for guinea pigs. I'm just being proactive.

No, they aren't the same. The roundworm is a worm and the ringworm is a contagious fungus.

I fed your whole question into www.Google.com and came up with a website that might help you. http://www.allaboutworms.com/category/parasite-worms/ (look towards the bottom half of the page)

Don't know much about guinea pigs, do you need to use a spot on treatment on your pig. It wouldn't be outside or near anything that could give it fleas, ticks, etc. I would be afraid to put any of those strong chemicals on a guinea pig. We have pet pigs at work and I have never heard of this before. If your pig has ringworm it will have small balding spots where the ring worm is. The fur will come off those areas. This can be treated with an otc athletics foot preparation. We use this on our kittens, worked great. Put a bit on each spot a couple times a day till red is gone. Wash your hands after handling your pig as this is contagious to humans. Round worms could be seen in the stools, but is unlikely your pig has these. Give your vet a call and ask about probability of this.

ring worm is not worms at all but a fungus. It looks like a target, like the Target store logo. Round worms are indeed worms that look kind of like spaghetti noodles, about half an inch to an inch long. Both are serious, ring worm is extremely contagious, and both should be treated by a vet.

Ring worm is on the skin and round worms are found internally. Round worms are a actual worm parasite, where ring worm is a fungal disease of the skin, scalp, or nails. With ring worm is causes intensely itchy ring-shaped patches develop and round worms causes diarrhea and sometimes you find them in the feces fo the animal. I don't think that Guinea Pigs can get round worms, they are typically found in dogs and cats. So it depends on what your Guinea Pig has on what treatment to use. Since you talked about a spot on treatment I'd most likely say your guinea pig has RING WORM since spot on treatments are for the skin.

No, they are different. It's good that you are being vigilant about this.

Ringworm is a fungus that affects the skin. It is not a "worm" (technically what we call "worms" are parasites.)

The ringworm fungus needs to be treated as a skin condition. It is also contagious to humans, but don't panic. It can be treated.

A roundworm is a parasite (worm) that lives in an animal's body and can be shed in the feces. Some types of roundworm can also affect humans. Again, don't worry. All you need is good information.

Please take your guinea pig to the vet if you haven't already and ASK about protecting yourself and ask how to properly treat your guinea pig. Ringworm can be uncomfortable so its important that it is treated by a pro! :)

no ringworm is on the skin. usually forms a ring, but can be irregular in shape. Very hard to get rid of. You must keep on it. It's a paracite. you can get med over the counter or on line. People can catch this. wash hands often. round worm is an intestional worm, common in kitten and puppies .

They aren't the same thing, round worm is in the body and comes out in feces, ring worm is a rash like condition on the skin. You should ask your vet what to do. They'll give you a better answer. I don't know too much about guinea pigs.

Good luck!

No. Roundworms are an intestinal worm that look like spaghetti noodles, ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin (similar to athlete's foot). Roundworms are found in virtually all puppies and kittens due to their life-cycle where they go dormant (and impossible to kill) in female dogs and cats until they are pregnant or lactating (when there are few safe, effective wormers). Ringworm is characterized by an irregular area of hair loss, red on the perimeter and scaly or shiny on the interior. It is infectious via contact to both other animals and humans, but is easily treated by topical anti-fungals available from your vet.

Don't want to be another broken record but above people are correct. Wash your hands after you handle it because humans can get ring worm too (had a friend catch it from her kitten)!

Here is some info on it for your further investigation.
