Lowering the tire pressure lessens the chance of your tires digging into sand and getting stuck.

ADDED:
What? OK, so what do you mean by "lowering tires"?
You can't "lower tires" if they're already on the ground. Unless you dig a hole.

Lowering the air pressures in the tires can allow the tires to grip better when climbing rocks or to 'float' better on soft surfaces like mud or loose sand. If you drop too much pressure, you run the risk of the tire slipping on the rim and going totally flat.

Running with lowered pressures will actually make the ride worse, as the vehicle tends to "wallow" on the softer tires, and your steering control won't be as precise.

Don't forget to reinflate your tires to the proper pressures when going back on the road.

Better traction, lowers rollover risk, lessens chance of busting a hole in tires on rocks because they are less firm and give a little.

Ground clearance will be sacrificed but the centre of gravity will be lowered which will decrease the possiblity of roll over.

it gives you a larger foot print increasing your contact with what ever you are trying to cross giving you better traction
