Because I'm in a small company, about 15 employees, HR procedures are not readily available. Decisions about pay are made up randomly, so if I take a day off I don't know if I'm getting paid until payday. Is this legal?

During my interview, I was told that I had sick and personal time but an exact number was never given. I guess being so nervous it didn't cross my mind until I didn't get paid. In addition, I asked about medical coverage and the different plans and was told that medical coverage was free but when it was time to enroll my dependents are $500 each.

When you are hired usually you find out if you have sick and vacation. If you do have vacation and sick and you don't trust them to keep track then you need to so you can dispute and indifferences. A company doesn't have to give you any sick or vacation. If you don't know if you get sick and vacation then ask you supervisor. It could be that your company doesn't allow paid sick or vacation. I would just plan on not getting paid for anytime you take off.

It is not un-common for small companies to not have a very fixed sick / personal day plan. The company where I am currently working is even smaller and there is no set amount of sick days. If you’re sick, you stay home and we typically don’t get docked for sick days or time taken for appointments. This is what some might call the “honour system”. If someone were to start taking advantage of the honour system, then they would probably start getting docked for taking time off and abusing the lax policy. As far as your vacation time…..2 weeks (10 weekdays) is the standard minimum vacation. If you wanted more vacation, the time to negotiate that would have been before accepting the position.

I don't know but I think it sounds like a fly-by-night company
