I have the hex tool and some other tools, I just don't know what to do.

It stopped working one morning mysteriously, when it had worked the evening before. I tried the re-set button, but all I got when I turned it on was an "electric hum" rather than the sound of the motor... I ahve the hex tool and other tools, I just don't know where to begin or how to go about it.

-First, for safety sake, make sure it is turned off at the switch. In addition, it is preferably if you can also turn off the power to the kitchen appliances by switch off the coresponding circuit breaker switch to the kitchen at the main circuit breaker pannel of the house. This is to insure that it does not start spinning while you are working on it.
-Visually inpect the impeller (the grinder) with a flash light. Remove any trash or debris in the disposal. If you are not sure the power is off, don't use your bare hand, use a metal tongue to pick up the debris.
-Stick a broom stick's end and attemp to turn the impellor by pushing down on it and stirring to free it from jam. Your hands should not be in the impellor at this point.
-Once it is free from jam and can be turned freely, remove broom stick and press the reset button underneath the disposal motor.
-Turn the power on and switch on to test the disposal (always have your water running while using the disposal).
-If that doesnot work, you might need some professional plumber's help or at least someone who is a little more handy and can replace your disposal. Good luck!

First make sure power is off...then hunt the hex on the of the motor...find the allen wrench that fits properly...then turn your unit in both directions...this should free it up...if it turns easily then you have other problems with the motor...depending on whats wrong it could be cheaper to buy a new disposal and replace the old one...
