This isn't unique to "white" people (and WHICH "white" people - Slavs, Brits, Irish, Italians, French, etc.)
The Romans considered others barbarians. The Japanese considered others barbarians. And so on.. it is not unique to any ethnic group or nation.
It all comes down to this:
"We're us, and you're not, so we're better than you".
It has to do with comfort level - we are most comfortable with (and therefore think best) our own customs. Any of us. All of us, whatever land we live in, whatever our ethnicity.
There is certainly another component, which I posted about in terms of language here:

They don't. You didn't say where you're from. Some cultures are at a much lower standard than others. Very few Americans or Europeans would call the culture of Japan "uncivilized".
In some countries the people seem to think - - - we'll bang out the kids by the millions so long as someone else feeds and clothes them. That's bordering on being uncivilized.

this offends me immensely. I am not a puritan. i do not force other people into my religion or beliefs. I think you are stuck in the past and won't let it go. You are not talking about "most" white people, you are talking about a small number of white people. Those white people are wrong. But, i am sure there are just as many people from other cultures and ethnicity that think my culture is "uncivilized."
i think its a little ironic that you are talking about a "double standard" and completely shoving off your own double standard accusations.

You are wrong to use the word "most". Most implies more than 50% and unless you have interviewed at least half of the whites (whatever that means) on the planet, then you cannot make such a generalization. Therefore, your question is presumptively invalid.
Unquestionably, there are people who believe their culture to be superior to all others. I believe that you can create a list of qualities that a "civilized" culture ought to possess. And that this list would be agreeable to many cultures. But my list may differ from yours.
I think that northern and western Europeans (the group I think you are really talking about) have dominated much of the world for so long that is difficult for them to imagine that they are not superior. Although, on an intellectual level, I think many Europeans would concede that virtually all cultures are "civilized" at some level but that some do a better job of protecting the natural rights of its people, promoting education, and advancing quality of life issues.
Good Luck!

I am white, but I love to expierence other cultures! a person has a personality, no matter if they are white or not, and it might just be what is under the skin that is being arrogant. and by the way, everyine has their own definition of "uncivilized" it could be totally different for every person with a brain! ask around, and dont pre-jugde a person because of skin.

no longer promising to hide eveyrthing because i'm in a hurry, yet as I bear in options it: The Plains Indians scalped their enemies because they believed that the scalp replaced into the 'soul'. therefore, they took their enemy's 'soul' so that they would not ought to fulfill them in afterlife. White human beings seen it as savage. The Nomadic Plains Indians each each now and then left elderly relatives in the back of to die at the same time as transferring camp, in spite of the undeniable fact that this replaced into generally because the elderly had requested them too; they said it as an honorable thanks to die. White human beings said this as barbaric, particularly seeing because it replaced into their personal relatives individuals. desire that helped a touch :)

Many Japanese consider other Asians barbaric and would never associate with them. In Latin America richer countries look down on poorer ones. It's human nature.

"Most" whites? Sounds like a very broad generalization to me. Plus it sounds like 1950's or you live in the south!? I haven't heard anybody infer anything like that in years out here in Cali.
