The question of the border may be a little more complex than we sometimes think.
It is absolutely true that an unregulated border has become a risk to national security. On the other hand, it is also important to national security that the U.S. maintain good relations with Mexico.
In 1917, Germany actually solicited Mexico's help in World War I. In exchange, Germany promised Mexico the former Mexican territories of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Mexico turned this offer down, but the offer itself precipitated the US entry into WWI.
This illustrates a point we must not forget: Mexico is not our enemy, and we want to keep it that way.
The presence of many Mexican immigrants, and their children, in the U.S. would presumably influence Mexico not to ally itself with the enemies of the U.S. It would not benefit the US to expel the majority of Mexicans from the US, even if we could do it.
The US bears some responsibility for the fact that so many of the immigrants are illegal. For decades, most of us just ignored the immigration laws and were willing to have Mexicans come and work in the US. Of course, in those days most of the illegal immigrants were quite nice people. They still are, though there seems to be an increase in bad apples.
