Do you have to be past your due date to have your labor induced? I am almost 38 weeks and i was just wondering if anyone else was induced around this time. With out it being an emergancy. I know that its better to let nature take its course and thats what i would prefer but i work full time and will have to go back to work ASAP after my baby is born so having a schedualed delivery would really help with planning when to take my leave

I assume this is your first pregnancy. It's not unusual for your first to be overdue. They usually won't induce labour until around week 41 unless you or the baby are having problems. You could try some of the natural methods to speed up the process. I hear walking can be good. Best of luck and congratulations!

Talk to your doctor. In fact, I'm surprised your doctor hasn't discussed this with you already!!

38 weeks is considered full term, and some doctors will induce or perform a planned c-section upon request. Others prefer to let nature take it's course, and will only induce or plan a c-section if you are past 40 weeks, or if the baby seems to be in distress. It just depends on your doctor.

In the meantime--try walking and having sex a lot. You might even convince your doctor or nurse to strip your membranes for you. These things may kick start your labor for you, without having to resort to drug inductions (which have a pretty high rate of failure). If you have a failed chemical induction, you will need a c-section, which has a longer recovery time than a vaginal delivery, so theoretically you could be off work longer if you plan an induction than if you go into labor without intervention.

Good luck!! You'll be holding your little one before you know it!

If there's not a medical reason - the doctor will let you go til probably about 41 weeks. I have 3 kids. The first one was two weeks late, the second one a week early and my third one 6 days late. The last one - I was induced with b/c of high blood pressure.
Take as much time off as you can. It's hard going back to work, it's even harder when you're not emotionally and physically ready to.

I was in the same situation you are and they never induced my labor. She was born 3 days after her due date and I ended up having to have a C-section. I came back to work at 4 weeks but only part time and I will be honest, it was too soon. I think I would've healed faster had I taken the 8 weeks and then came back full time.

Most doctors will induce labor 2 weeks past your due date...sometimes one week depending on the doctor. My daughter came 2 days before her due date just as the doctor and i were discussing induction.
My best advice is to let nature take it's course. I know it's exciting when you're that close but induction is not always the best answer.

Talk to your doctor about it. I've been induced with all my children (mainly because they were big babies):
1st: On my due date
2nd: 39 weeks
3rd: 38 weeks
4th: Next monday (I'll be a bit over 39 weeks, my doc decided this week would be a great time to go in vacation *grumble*)

It depends on your doctor. My doctor said he would induce me at 39 weeks but anytime before then. Well I gave birth at 38 and a half so I didn't have to do that. But you have to wait until at least 37 weeks because that's when the lungs completely develop.

With inductions there's a greater risk of complications and emergency c-sections. If you have a c-section the recovery time will be longer, it will be more difficult to take care of the baby, and harder to go back to work right away. Best of luck and try to be patient. You can do squats leaning slightly over your belly and push down after the pressure builds a lot. That can help you dilate and go into labor on your own.

I was induced at 38 weeks b/c I had hyperemessis and actually went into labor but it would stop when i sat/layed down for them to monitor my contractions. everything was fine no complications. You could ask your dr. to do so but most will not do it until your at least 39 weeks and show sings that your ready like efacement and dialation. good luck
