Hi. One example is the jack you plug the monitor into. 15 pin "D" shaped jack. Each of the 15 positions is available for some function, such as video, ground, etc. The pin out is the designation of each position. I think this is what you mean.

You must have done all that already to get a Yahoo account to be able to take part in Answer. Configuration means to put in your personal details, like name, age, email address, correct entry of incoming & outgoing mail numbers, etc. so that you can be connected to the net. Application is to carry out an action to make it function.

As 'cirric' explained above, pinout configuration refers to the way the pins are placed on a certain port. For example, all USB ports have a certain pinout configuration of their own while all DVI ports have their own specific pinout configuration.
Its importance lies in that it creates a standard design which allows for interoperability.
