Many poems and books are in the public domain because copyrights have expired or the work was not copyrighted. I can ask the US Copyright Office, but it is expensive. Does a college or someone have infor to show me the best way to research and determine if a poem or book is copyright free..or in the public domain> Thanks.

It doesn't cost anything to check copyright status of a book. Just use the link below.

Remember, however, that registration with the copyright office is NOT required for copyright protection. Though I did find a little flow chart that might help you.

Anything published before 1923 is public domain. Anything after 1923, the author/artist has to be deceased. As of 1978, a copyright is in possession of the originating creator til their death plus 70 years. Her/his heirs would hold the copyright.
