The class centers around interpreting poetry. I'm very quiet and usually don't ask questions in class, but I had what I thought was a good and valid question.
There was a word in the poem that I didn't know. So I looked it up. The word had two meanings, both of which were very different from the other. I didn't know if one definition or the other was to what the author was referring. I asked, 'Which is it?' She answered, 'Both.' Then she looked away from me and to the class and says, 'Too bad people don't realize they have a stupid question until after they ask it.' What the hell? Maybe the use of multiple definitions in one instance is commonplace in poetry or other fictional writings (is it?), but I took the class to learn these things. And in the rest of the world, writing is supposed to be concise and precise to get the point across without confusion and misinterpretation.
Do you think there is any validity to her remark?

Later, I thought about what I could have said had I not been so flabbergasted. What do you think of this? I wanted to say to her, ‘If I said that I learned that I must be an idiot through my studies, would I be referring to my classes which are part of my academic studies or to a research study designed to collect empirical data to determine the perceived stupidity of any question? It must be both?’

Yes, you were b*tch-slapped. However, it is not necessarily your fault and, while words often have double meanings in poetry, it was mean of her to call your question dumb and embarrass you. A better teacher would have kindly corrected you and after class offered you additional help. Remember, you were the one brave enough to ask the "dumb question" that at least one other person had and was too afraid to ask...

Your teacher has no right to insult you that way. You must write a letter of complain addressed to the head of the department or the school .
Sometimes, a poor teacher would get annoyed at students who asked her a question she did not really know the answer. Your teacher seemed to fit this category to the extreme and her answer "Both" was very indicative that she did not know the answer.
The b*tch should be fired for lack of classroom decorum.

She sounds like a poor excuse for an educator. I would tell her the only stupid questions are the ones that go unasked, and it is part of her job to impart the knowledge that a student needs, which she failed to do. You might say : Too bad people pick careers that they are unsuited for and realize too late that they are shortchanging the ones thay are supposed to serve".

I disagree with the actuality that christian mum and dad are pulling their toddlers out of sophistication. And with it being an hassle-free college instructor why might it rely if the instructor is gay or directly. i think of that it incredibly is not one of the baby's corporation what form of existence a instructor has exterior of school. i do no longer think of the instructor being gay might influence their characteristics as a instructor, so consequently i do no longer think of it concerns. i visit declare that I disagree with the instructor having a image of their better half on their table. questioning back while i became in hassle-free college not one of the academics had photos of their households sitting out for others to be certain, and that i do agree that the instructor needs to eliminate the photograph, because of the fact returned the youngsters shouldn't comprehend something approximately any instructors existence exterior of school. So any photos of pets, or family participants would desire to be got rid of, only because of the fact it would not would desire to be there.

Nobody in the class would think less of you. They would think that this teacher is a *****. Just get out of this class, get your credit and move on. Maybe some day if you are a teacher you can be better than her.

Whether or not your question was "stupid"... it was totally rude and inappropriate for any teacher to make that remark.
Personally, I would demonstrate to that teacher that I have more class than she does. Put your objection in a polite but direct way, in writing, and give it to her.

I think you should speak to her. It may be very difficult to get much out of the class from here on out if you don't resolve this with her.
