Is it appropriate for a male and a female, who claim their friendship to be platonic, to end their email exchanges with "Love You", "Love you and thinking of you", "Miss you and Love you always", "I love you so much!". Note that they send email to each other about once a week. Would you suspect anything else if those two people are not separate by distance?

My question is with respect to American culture. I notice that teenagers boys and girls talk like that to their friends nowaday. But both parties in question here are in their early 40's, married with children.

That does not sound platonic.

I think they are just using the word "love" in a platonic way. Girls often end emails this way to friends. They are fortunate to have a male/female friendship that demands nothing more. I would take them at their word.

Sounds like they are friends, and wish to express their friendship in "friendly" ways. What is the "culture" of the relationship? If those words are used a lot and yet nothing more intimate is expected out of either, then it is just the norm or culture that these friends share. If however, the words are relatively new in the relationship, then perhaps one or both as seeking to expand the relationship into something more.

I would think a casual love, so and so would be ok, but what you're describing sounds over the edge to me! I would be curious to know if they BOTH think it's platonic.

It doesn't seem they are "just friends."

Obviously.
