A code 1698 means that one or more of the vehicles' computers is not communicating with the others. Obviously, in your case, the Instrument Cluster (Yes, it IS a computer!) These vehicles were rather famous for the ground pin on the back of the instrument clusters' printed circuit board "breaking loose" and thus shutting down the cluster. It usually is just a bad solder joint, and generally, can be re-soldered and will cure the problem. Worse case scenario, is the cluster printed circuit board will need replacement. Have this repaired and the computer(s) reset (engine, transmission, and body) before any other diagnostics. IMHO, this will cure your problem. Good Luck, HTH!!

The "check engine soon" light being on indicates that the computer is detecting an issue. It is best not to run the car much at all until it is serviced. However, you should be able to get away with some minimal driving if you cannot take it in until tomorrow. Just don't go on a cross country trip or anything big.

That particular code has to do with the electrical system. See the link below for how another individual got it fixed.
Excerpt from the page:
He ran some test and thought that if we put a different tcm in that it would fix it.But he just call me back and said that he put another tcm in the that the PO1698 went away but the PO700 is still there.
Hope this helps. Cheers!
Added: See the second link for more detail. Also, TCM stands for Transmission Control Module.

It's an issue with the transmission---with the electrical, not the actual shifting part...Yes, a new TCM might work, but it could also be something simple, like a leaky line.
I'm thinking since your dash lights were off, that dovetails into the electrical issue, so yeah, I'm going with the tranny module or even a tranny sensor. Probably just blew, like when you blow a fuse at home.

If you have a trusted auto repair person have them do a quick check. Most of those engine lights are put in by the car manufactures and can only be turned off by the dealership. You may just need a tune up/oil change.

A working wealthy situation on a gasoline injected motor vehicle is often because of the fact that is not getting sufficient air it fairly is oftentimes led to via a plugged air filter out. have you ever checked that those days? there's a distinction between a "provider engine quickly" easy and a "verify engine" easy. i think that your easy is extra of a upkeep reminder. If the verify Engine easy replaced into on, that could point out that the laptop has already got here across a fault and has saved a code.

You have problems. Don't drive it until you take it to the shop tomorrow.
