Egypt is a desert because it does not rain there. The only source of water is the Nile. It is the only river in Egypt. So its importance is that it is life itself for the Egyptians. They drink its water, they also use it for irrigation.

Recently saw a documentary on the Nile recently and it said that the Egyptians are still very dependent on the Nile for irrigation of crops.
