Those that said a crib is not mobile and can't fit beside your bed are not correct, you CAN move a crib (you may have to take it apart first, but we had one that was really easy to take apart and put back together.) You can fit a crib beside your bed, it's called sidecarring, and a lot of people do it so they can cosleep more comfortably (for example if they have a small bed.)

Personally, I think a bassinet is just another thing baby stores make you think you need when you don't need it at all. It might be nice to have, but it's not necessary (neither is a crib though.) We borrowed a bassinet from a friend when my daughter was born, and she was in it when I went to the bathroom the day we came home from the hospital. She started crying and getting really fussy and the whole bassinet shook. Because of this, I don't think a bassinet is as sturdy as a crib, and we gave it back to our friend the next day.

Bassinet - is up to around 3 months of age - plus with a bassinet you can keep it closer to your bed if you so wish.
Crib is for babies 3 months - approx 2 years. All 3 of my kids went straight to a crib though. A bassinet is not really necessary although some people say it gives babies comfort b/c it is "snugger" than a crib.

Baby Crib ~ a child's bed with enclosed sides.

Bassinet ~ a basket with a hood over one end, for use as a baby's cradle.

If you look at the pictures attached to this answer, you will see there is a big difference.

The crib is generally larger and square in shape. It has no rocking feature.

The Bassinet has an overhang. It is smaller, rounder and more snug for the baby. And some have a rocking feature.

A crib is not mobile because of it's size whereas a bassinet is smaller and has a hood (kind of like a pram), it also has the ability too swing which is great for putting the baby to sleep and soothing him/her. the only disadvantage with a bassinet is that you can only use this whilst the baby is small and does not move about because unlike the crib the bassinet has no supporting barriers so if he/she was to stand or look over they would fall out.

bassinet is smaller, prettier and easy to wheel to different place (if need). But it can be used for newborn and usually under certain weight like 20 lb.

I have both crib and bassinet at home. Right now with my 21 days old son and we are loving the bassinet.

Good luck!

Cribs are larger then bassinets. Bassinets are meant for newborns until they are 12-15 lb depending on the bassinet and until they can roll over on their own.

A bassinet is smaller and is usually just for newborns. It has a skirt around it. A crib is made of wood and has slats along the sides. It can be used until the child is one or 2 years old.

a baby crib is large and a bassinet is smaller. You can use a baby crib up til the baby is 2 years old if you wanted to.

A bassinet you can only use up to 20 lbs maybe a bit more.
