How do I tell if my newborn is drinking too much. The side of the SMA gold tin says that a 7.5lb baby should be drinking 18oz per day. Our daughter drinks approx 30-35oz per day. Earlier this week we couldnt keep up, she would polish off 5oz every 3-4 hours and sometimes wake up in between for an oz. She spit dummies out and cried so that didnt work. The HV said dont use SMA white as it sits in their bellies too long and can make them unsettled or constipated. She was 5 weeks early and wasnt officially due until 23/3/07. She weighs in at about 8lb now. Do we just keep going with the SMA gold or not ?

Keep giving her what she wants if she is happy and thriving it must be working. No two people are the same as indeed no two babies are the same. As long as she does not get overweight keep your baby happy....never forget YOU know her best so go with your instinct.

Hi

I have a 3mth baby and use SMA Gold (first infant milk) and I have the tin front of me now.

If your baby is 8lbs then you can feed him/her 4oz's (120ml) every 4hrs (but no more than 6 feeds in 24hrs).

Also if your baby is taking 30-35oz then she/he probably has an upset stomach as to much formula can do this. This could be a reason why your baby keeps waking. And wants to feed as a form of comfort. Babies are clever and discover very early on that the white stuff is more comforting than a dummy.
Try cooled boiled water instead in between feeds and see if this helps.

All of the above is just my opinion. The best person to know is you. Trust your instincts they will seldom lie to you. If you are not happy then speak to your HV again or go and see your GP. You could also try NHS Direct.

Goodluck x

Firstly - Congratulations!
Being a first time mother is so worrying to most of us!
I went through similar with my son. He was the opposite - arrived two weeks late! When I brought him home from hospital he cried and cried after feeds and in-between feeds. In fact it felt as if he cried all the time!
I checked all the usual - dry nappy, burping, not too hot etc etc. I was so conscious of HV's monitoring of weight that I didn't follow my instincts to increase the feed. I tried giving little drinks of boiled water in case he was thirsty rather than hungry. After 2 weeks he was worn out and so was I, and he was still crying!
I gave up, made up a full bottle and let him take what he needed. He was finally satisfied and I was relieved!
I guess breast-feeding mothers don't have this problem because they don't know how much baby has taken.

Buf if you are still worried - ring your HV and talk about it. That's what they are there for, to advise and listen.
Don't worry about how small the problem may seem to them, they are used to it.
Best of luck with your new little one.

Hi
Babies will eat differently. Some eat alot and some not much, do not worry about how much. They go through constant growth spurts also which makes them eat alot.
As long as she is not spitting it up she is not getting too much!
Also, about the formula, all formula sits in the belly and doesn't break down easily. they all cause constipation because of that and the iron content. The only kind that does not constipate is soy and the extremely expensive formulass for babies who can't digest regular formula.
Don't switch because of that either, if your baby is eating well and growing don't worry.
Deal with constipation when it happens. Plenty of things you can do for it!

The guide on the side of the tins is just a rough guide, all babies are different.
Ive had two Preemie babies, one born at 36 weeks and another at 32 weeks and both of them were really greedy babies.
I think they just need the extra calories to keep them going!!
I actually weaned both mine at 4 months, even thou was not told to until they were at least 6 months. However before I get lynched im not saying you should do this but it was the only thing that worked with mine and they are both fine, neither have had tummy problems and they both still love their food.

Try the sma white (blue tin ) for hungrier babies. My son didn't suffer constipation although he did have colic but i think most babies get this. H.V often have the best of intentions but there advice cant apply to every baby as they are all different, My HV gave me the same advice (but now think she was secretly trying to punish me for not breast feeding! LOL) sometime you just have to use your own initiative and do what you thinks best. GOOD LUCK! xx

If you are concerned about your daughter drinking to much, contact her doctor. Also sometimes premmies will drink a lot, they are just trying to catch up. Since she seems to be putting on weight, I wouldnt be overly concerned. Also she is likely putting out lots of wet diapers. Perhaps you could try to put a little more in the bottles, feeding may not be as frequent. Put an extra ounce in and see what happens. It is too early to put her on pablum especially if she is a premmie. Lots of babies wont take a dummy.

Good Luck

The HV said to change from SMA so do that. Also try not to demand feed her, she's getting use to crying for food and getting it. try comforting her in other ways or entertaining her. it might even be the comfort of touch she wants.

hope this helps.

I personally get Hipp Organic 1 for my little one. I breastfed her first 5 months and when I introduced her to formula she couldn't digest too. She used bring up the most of it. I tried all sorts of brands and this one worked for her. I suppose because it's organic there's no junk chemicals in there and it's more natural and easier to digest it.
Feed her on demand sometimes they have growth spurt so I wouldn't be worried much.
Good luck!
