It is an exaggerated stereotype. It is similar to the proper English butler, the kindly Irish priest or the French homosexual. Except that the French homosexual is not an exaggeration ;)

LOL hey come on not all the horror movies have that. At least not anymore, at least not the ones we American's watch. Seriously though yeah I almost bet you could find a backwoods town like that, well maybe not cannibals but the inbreeds and toothless banjo players.

sorta, but not really. sure, we have small towns where the people have inbred a little, but nowhere near like they show in the movies. I've been through lots of small towns and granted, a lot of the people who live in these towns are what some people would call 'hicks', but this is because they are different from most of the people who live here. we often put people in groups just because we don't understand them. a fault i try to avoid as much as possible. really the people are often very intelligent if you just take the time to get to know them.
peace

This unfortunately does exist but not to that extreme. Some small communities way back in the hills(mountains) are so isolated that they rarely see any outside people. Sometimes they marry cousins and other relatives and so form their own little town. It is possible that this can cause some mental problems to occur. Just opens the doors of a vivid imagination to enter and invent a story.

There are plenty of places like that and the more I travel the more amazed I am that some people who live in America can scratch out an existence with their feeble brains and redneck ways. The South (Alabama, Georgia, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida...) is most commonly associated with these ignorant retches, but there are plenty of hick towns in the north also. I think there are stupid people all over the US, but the tend to congregate together in rural areas.

Yes such places exist, but they are of course exaggerations of reality!
Try Kentucky, West Virginia, some parts of Tennessee small rural towns!
Mountain regions in particular

I guess you've never been to New York City or Los Angeles. Believe me, the inbred freaks in these towns make appalachia look like utopia.

I guess that is kind of a scary scenario, you know? Just a "what if" and a scary urban legend telling you 'stay the hell away from your cousins. Incest is sick and wrong and this is what your offspring will look like!'
