The was a recent article on Yahoo stating that houses are worth less than cars in Detroit; in fact the term "worth" is simply a nominal expression. These areas are not habitable and outside of salvage material, have no value for all practical purposes. It astounds me that there are still people to be found in some of these terrifying neighborhoods that have been all but reclaimed by nature. It's no way to live, and without money, there's no way to fix it.

The city is making an effort to demolish these vacant areas and centralize the city's population, but progress is at a snail's pace. The derelict Fischer Body 21 building on the 75/94 interchange is the most visible sign of Detroit's urban failure, and makes it clear that America has every potential of devolving into a third-world state. As we spend billions rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan, Detroit continues to crumble into ruin with no sign of hope for a turnaround.

A shrinking tax base makes it difficult to make improvements that the city needs. Angel investors are few and far between. If they can take care of their dereliction problems it will be a huge boon to the city image, but in fact the dereliction is growing, not shrinking. How do you deal with the consistent exodus of population to the tune of 15,000 heads a year?
