When I sing, my voice doesn't go into the high range at all. I have a rather deep voice, but it's hard to hit anything decent sounding. My voice also has a kind of annoying rasp to it when i sing. i can't get through half of a song before it turns raspy again. It's not raspy when I speak.

You will need to expand your range gradually. Start by singing a scale at a comfortable key for your voice. Then gradually work in one more note, and slowly switch keys. Plus, relax your throat. Often you don't realize that your tense, but it constricts your vocal chords, making it hard to sing, especially high. I'm a coloratura soprano, so I know where you're coming from. Don't push your voice before it's ready, and project. That's often another main cause. Hope that helps!!! Ciao!!! (And it might not be all that bad to own that low voice. Low voices have a sultry sound, and it's probably not as bad as you say. We are our own worst critics after all!)

I get that problem often when singing (the raspy thing). What helps me is to keep a bottle of ice cold water and sip or gurgle some before a song. This will take the raspy sound away and may help you hit higher notes. Remember that whatever pitch-range your voice has, that's where it will stay, so work with what you have and try not to over-stress your vocal chords hitting notes much higher than you can go.

Cheers

The tendency when straining for those high notes is to tighten your throat too much. Singing, like exercise, requires a proper warm-up and lots of work-outs in order to reach that "toned" look or in the case of vocals, sound. Relax your throat, stretch out the vocal cords and avoid undue strain. Work within your natural voice range whenever possible. Also, warm salt water prior to a performance helps keep your throat from drying out and your voice from cracking. Most importantly, proper breathing from your diaphragm rather than shallow breaths is important for strong volume. As an illustration, sing a note then push hard on your abdomen and note the difference in sound level. Protect your throat and tone your abs at the same time. How cool is that?! : )

It is probably because you are trying to sing higher than your natural range. There is nothing at all wrong with a bass voice.
Sing in a lower pitched voice and you will probably lose the raspy sound and the high notes will be high in comparison to the low notes you are singing.

sounds the way your describing honey you should just stop trying to sing well. Some of us just can't sing..Does that mean you stop singing all together HECK NO! You get confident in who you are and certainly belt some notes out while in your car or jamming in the shower..etc.. but typically if you are raspy when you sing or if you can hit any notes you like you just were not meant to sing professionally. Definatly stay away from American Idol but let all your friends know you ain't trying to sing good you just singing cause it makes you feel good. Oh and hey if you turn the radio up loud enough while you are singing you'll sound great cause you sound just like the artist (cause you can't hear yourself) Good luck !

High notes are hardest to hit when you're trying to sing quietly. Try really projecting your voice, lots of volume. Or maybe those notes are just out of your range.

Drink warm water just before singing, it is also good to sing in the shower because of the humidity.

Good Luck

Perhaps you are just meant to be an alto, tenor, or bass.
