It depends on the type of tree. A tree with shallow roots or brittle wood will fall more quickly than a tree with deep roots and harder wood. Wind is also a factor. Dead trees are dangerous. I wouldn't want to have one in my yard because it's such an unpredictable situation.

dead trees will fall apart a little at a time starting with the smaller limbs first.unless a woodpecker,or some other cretter builds a nest in it then it could break there.if the tree is near a power line the power co. may cut it for free ,so as not to take out the power lines. if it is near your house or buildings, you might want to talk to a professional to cut it .do not do this yourself it is dangerous.if you talk to a pro. get more than 1 bid ..

I have a 70 foot Loblolly Pine that was hit by lightning. The tree guy said it wasn't worth cutting down as the lightning has kind of petrified the wood. It is still standing after 2 years so I guess it's ok.

Sometime between never and right after you cut it.
A dead tree is still there, its a matter of taking it down. You kill it so it doesnt keep growing, and becoming more and more invasive.

I've had a dead pint tree in my yard for five years. It is still as sturdy as when it was living. I suspect it will be there another 20 years if I don't take it down myself.
