I thought he was born in 1990! Or 1989 or whatever... but 1980? He's old!

Where did this idea come from?

I am interested to see if computers appear in the last book. Yahoo started in about 1996, so Dudley may have gotten one for his birthday. He could do a word search on Horcruxes to help Harry's search ... LOL

This "idea" is fact.

In book 2 (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets), Nearly Headless Nick's 500th Deathday cake is dated "1492-1992."

Because Harry is 12 years old at that point, he was born in 1980. Simple subraction :-)

See the link below for the Harry Potter Lexicon's timeline - it's very interesting!

Nope he was born in the 80's and the actual books take place in the 90's.

I believe that is when JK Rowling came up with Harry, hence his 'birthdate'.

it is the 90's because JK started writing it in the 90's.
