Yes, they are indeed Meercats. They are not actually related to cats in any way, and are infact a member of the mongoose family. They are fascinating creatures that form strong family bonds and some of the most complex social networks of any animal. I myself find them to be so endearing, and as others have already mentioned, you can see them in all their glory in the television series, "Meercat Manor", which is about a family called The Whiskers, and their daily lives.
Cambridge university has been doing a 10 year study about their lives, which has formed the basis for this fascinating programme. It's not a usual animal documentary, a-la-Attenborough, as it is highly dramatized and formatted in the style of a soap opera. I myself can't get enough of it!

In africa- maybe the meerkat among others. In the US, the most widely known arid mammals would be prairie dogs or kangaroo rats.
