1) They might be as busy in their own lives as everyone else, but they are capable of caring and being altruistic;

2) They are professionals in their own right but they don't wear it as a badge of achievement for all to marvel. They are down to earth;

3) They are divergent thinkers with open minds that don't also work as open drains.

I have to be honest...I really don't have that many close friends. My wife and my kids are my closest friends, and probably my brothers after that. I think the basis of a solid friendship is a genuine feeling that you want the best for that other person. Open communication and being to talk about anything without that person judging you is critical too. And being able to just be yourself and be accepted for who you are (good and bad).

My best friends are women whom I can trust implicitly. We share intelligent conversation and humour in a non threatening, non sexual honesty. Humour is the strongest thing that binds us. No matter how dire the World there is always a funny side to things. My male friends I care for for the same reasons but I appreciate the challenge as a man of genuinely understanding women.

Women are wonderful, fascinating beings.

Of course friends can also be lovers too and that is a bonus!

friendships are all meant to b treasured, but yes, some do stand out and are exceptionaly good friends. People who care, people who are on the same wavelength with you, and people who would rather get hurt than see a friend sad.... Funny but these qualities are rare to say the least... as someone rightly said.. A good friend is one who will bail you out of jail,....... but a true friend would be siting right beside you and say ..."we had a ball didn't we???

1) Humorous
2) Intelligent/Knowledgeable (I am able to discuss many different topics with them)
3) Common experiences/interests (This is a pretty obvious one that should apply to just about all friends; you probably aren't friends if you don't have a common belief on at least a few things.)
