In my mind, music implies musicians and instruments, not electronic noise and beat boxes.

I used to feel that same way that you do. I was exclusively a rock music fan. Then, I realized that my view of hip hop music was really limited and ignorant. Don't judge rap music based on what you see on MTV. That's like saying that Hinder and Nickleback represent all rock and roll. (A sad thought, if you ask me.)

To say that rap musicians aren't musicians simply because they don't play guitar, piano or drums is really short-sighted. Beings a musician is about making music, not playing a traditional instrument. (After all, just because you can play the guitar doesn't mean that you're a "musician." Again, look at Nickleback.) Most of rock's great frontmen (Elvis, Jim Morrison, Mick Jagger, Joey Ramone, Bono, Morrissey, Robert Plant) can barely play an instrument. That doesn't devalue them, though. They're great for other reasons.

A lot of rap music contains a lot of live instruments and is very musically savvy. Check out the following:

1. De La Soul
2. k-os
3. The Roots (for the record, they're a full band and play their own instruments)
4. Blackalicious
5. The Fugees
6. Outkast
7. A Tribe Called Quest
8. J-Dilla
9. Little Brother
10. Danger Doom

It might not be your cup of tea (especially on the first few listens), but that doesn't mean that it isn't any good.

Lastly, all types of music are needed for all people. It just shows cultural ignorance to disregard a culture's music. Different strokes for different folks, right? In the same way that country music is made for certain cultures and punk is made for certain cultures, rap is made for certain cultures as well.

P.S. I hope you aren't a Nickleback fan. My apologies if you are.

LOL... so what do you call the Roots who are a BAND!?

I think it is so funny how so many people on here have so many negative things to say about Rap & Hip Hop, have any of you ever tried to Rap? Can anybody who talks all this s**t spit a verse like Twista, cuz let me tell you I can scream into a mic all day and call it Metal or Alternative (LOL)

And in my opinion until you know the History and facts about anything you shouldn't be speaking about it.

I have been in countless numbers of studios where rap and Hip Hop tracks have been produced and I have seen LIVE musicians laying down the pieces for the beats, idiots!

I am not saying all Rap music is great, a lot of it sucks but so does a lot of Alternative, Metal, Reggage, Pop, Rock, etc.
There is good music and there is not so good music in every style

Yes no talet what so ever. Some older rap I gotta give credit. They started it all and were original in doing it. But todays rappers are horrible. What are they saying anyway? More like actors than musicians!

So true!!! I always told my son that I like most kinds of music but rap doesn't qualify as music so we don't listen to it. He's now 16 and can't stand rap either. Great question!!!

It is. That's why nobody says "rap music." It's rap, not rap music.
