I think satire holds a mirror in front of both sides of an issue. Even though it's distorted, there's truth in there, and I believe most individuals can see that. In this respect, satire is much like stereotypes. Even though not all people from Arkansas go to family reunions to pick up dates and wear overalls and chew on sticks, there is, or has been at some time, an element of truth in there somewhere. (I'm from Arkansas so I'm not just picking on the good folks that live there.)
If both sides are willing, they might see what others see and change their behavior; perhaps view themselves for the eyes of others and step back.
However, if the issue is heated, such as the battle between liberal and conservative, the message is more than likely falling on deaf ears, or will be so one-sided that the message is lost.

It intimidates. Nobody wants to be lambasted. And it works - largely because the people doing the ridiculing control the medium. You can't get on stage and say wait a minute, Reagan never said that about AIDS, he just said you assumed the risk, much like a motorcyclist riding without a helmet assumes the risk of head injury, and by the way he was RIGHT about that. You just get to throw bomb after bomb no matter how silly - to a packed house full of people who agree with it, not to the broader public - and then this gets broadcast to people by media outlets that also agree with you.
Nobody likes having that done to them.
And that's why so many people go to Washington saying "I'm going to cut spending and end all this PC crap" and end up selling out.
THAT was the problem with Nixon - he cared too much about what people thought of him.

It only pumps up the one who does the ridiculing and they do it because they feel inadiquate in some fashion and feel the need to bring others down. It is like a pack of wolves with one leader, one of the other wolves will bite and snip the others to get into second place. In a sense, he is picking on or ridiculing them to pump up his postition. As humans, we are in an extremely huge pack and some less intellegent among us will ridicule others to make it seem like we are a little higher on the perverbial totum pole.

Some people need to be shown how idiotic their ideas are. For example, the anti war left.
