Marketing evolved out of economics, which is why economics is usually a required course for marketers. Economics generally looks at supply and demand in terms of price, while marketing broadens that and puts it in more than monetary terms. For example, where an economist would try to stimulate demand for a product by reducing the price, a marketer would suggest that ways of making the product "cheaper" for the consumer would include not only price reduction, but offering more for the money (including better branding, more features, or more convenience).
