He has been outside this morning and could hold himself up. (he is 11 yrs old 72 LB yellow lab retriever, injured one of his back legs yrs ago and has favored it ever since it is difficult to only have 2 good legs to hold him.Tried to keep an icepack on but only stayed for awhile I am curious how can I check to see if the leg is broke?

There is the possiblity that it is broken, take him to a vet. Sprains usually don't bother animals that much. And the lump is very concerning to me. Also his age could have alot to do with it. Don't take chances and get him to a vet for an x-ray. 72lb is a lot of weight to be putting on a hurt foot

Take your dog to the vet. He can take an ex ray if needed to determine if bone is broken. It could be a number of things. Maybe the vet can also give your dog a stronger med. for pain or even arthritis if he has that. Older dogs ofter develop similar aging diseases that humans do.
