It is called "exponential growth." That sounds like a pretty reasonable doubling rate for humans; assuming that each woman has on average, about 4.2 children that survive as adults. This is actually one of the *slowest* reproductive rates in the animal kingdom!

Most rodents, if given a sufficient food supply, and an environment free of predators, diseases, and competition, can theoretically double their population in 1 to 2 months. Some bacteria can do so in less than 1 hour!

The reason the human population continues to grow at an exponential rate, is that we have no natural predators, few serious diseases, no competitors(besides ourselves), and we seem to be pretty adept at getting food(for the present)

The fertility rate among native US citizens is only about 1.8, significantly less than the ideal replacement rate of about 2.1, so the native population is actually *shrinking!* The only reason the total population of America continues to grow is because of immigration....

In "sub-Saharan" Africa, the birthrate is still very high, about 5-6, but because of poverty, famine, war, AIDS, and other diseases, a large number of individuals are dying young, before they have many children, so in some countries the population is only growing very slowly....

At the time of Christ, the world population was probably around 300 - 400 *million*; not 300,000.

It is estimated by 2050 there will be somewhere between 12 and 20 billion people.

We eventually do reach a point where the Earth itself, cannot feed or shelter the numbers that are born.

Once backwards countries are now becoming forward countries, like India and China. More money means better healthcare which means more people living. People aren't dying like they used to. Populations in Western countries is actually stabilized.

Yes. I think we will be standing on top of each other soon! The main reason for this is better health care.

Maybe its because the world is a better, healthier safer and more prosperous place than ever.

Super-Enviro-Saints Al (Gore) and Mike (Moore) seem to think thats a bad thing somehow.

I wonder what do they suggest we do exactly -- regress or maybe mass sterilizations, I dunno...
