This is an American term from about 100 yrs ago. People of Dutch extraction were at that time percieved as being very tight-fisted, so if each person pays their own expenses it was called "going dutch". This was back in the days when it was expected that the man would pay for everything; often these days it's the norm for each to pay their way, unless the relationship starts to get serious.
