Yes, I think he does. He won 9 Gold Gloves which is second all time as a first baseman. He still has the record for hitting a home run in 8 straight games. He also has the highest fielding percentage of all time with .996.

If you go by name recognition yes, If you go by the numbers no, he just didnt have enough. Playing in the same era as Puckett really hurts him too, because Puckett's numbers are so much better.
Puckett: 12 Seasons 2304 hits(5 200+) .318BA/.837OPS 207HR/414 2B 1085 RBIs
Mattingly 14 Seasons 2153 hits(3 200+) .307BA/.829OPS 222HR/442 2B 1099 RBIs
While the numbers are pretty similar Puckett did it in 2 less season and Mattingly was only average after '87 and not very good after '89. Only hit 45 HR in last 6 season and only hit above .300 once.
I can't see putting someone in who only had 4 great seasons
84-87 119 of his 222 HRs .337 in 2501 ABs
.292 in 4502ABs 103HRs in the other 10 years
Throught history there are tons of guys who had 3-5 year stretches of being dominate who are not in the HOF, but the HOF is for excellence over 12-15-20 years not 4

If you're a Yankee fan as I think you are then it's a heart pick. He's just under Hall of Fame credentials. He might get in with the veterans committee. Compare his numbers to Gywnn and Ripken you'll see he comes up a little short. I loved Donnie but if his back didn't bother hime in the last few years of his career he would have been a 1st ballot guy..

quickly Jackson would be yelling for those damn whippersnappers to get off his backyard. Eh; many times, that is Reggie!, and his mouth has under no circumstances been properly-supported via thinking purposes. yet he's giving a sterling occasion of why the collective HOFers have been a completely depressing voters while they have been tasked with ballots 3 or 4 cases final decade. being waiting to play large does not immediately translate into being waiting to evaluate from the place that large taking part in got here (Joe Morgan additionally examined this each and every time he introduced a interest; the guy had no coherent notions of what it replaced into he did so properly, to the ingredient he replaced into inadvertently denouncing his own taking part in skills in others). i don't evaluate Puckett or Rice relatively solid alternatives, yet they are defensible ones. and that i comprehend why some human beings prefer to offload on Sutton. Carter replaced into the pre-eminent catcher of his era, and belongs. Niekro could be fairly comped to Carlton in terms of what they have been given achieved on the mound; surely belongs. And Bert? Bert might desire to have been in years in the past and surely belongs -- and that could be a chortle to work out what Jackson did against Blyleven: in a hundred and forty PA (the batter Bert confronted the main) he controlled to place up a triple scale down of .214 / .264 / .397 with 40 9 strikeouts. remarkable going, Reg, relatively went as much as corridor Of repute snuff there. for extra entertainment, Jackson is going directly to declare that Morris replaced right into a miles better pitcher than Blyleven, including the ultimate whiff of cinders to this smoking crater of a announcement. observe that %. and the youngster are not around to guard themselves, might desire to they have had to. right this is hoping the different men purely snub Jackson on the ceremonies. surely, they don't might desire to care, because of the fact their plaques are continuously.

Absolutely!! If not for that terrible back injury he would have played on the Yankees world series championship teams of 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. He lost at least have prime seasons. If Kirby Puckett can be elected due to his injury shortened career than so should Donny "Baseball". Mattingly was a much more ball player as well.

Generally it's 3000 hits that give you the ticket. 250 home runs are not enough either. He does get more consideration than he's worth because he was a Yankee. But there are more deserving candidates. Why isn't Ron Santo in? His stats are better, and they often say there aren't enough Third Basemen in the Hall, but he was only a Cub!

probably not because of his career being cut short by his back injuries but a first-round lock if he could have played longer. he was the premier player in baseball for a decade on offense+ defense. his numbers are comparable to pucketts and i don`t think he should have been voted in either, ron santo fans ;he was very good , not great , and while very well liked and his current condition garners some votes , its unlikely he will make in 2009 / Great GUY though !

Donnie Baseball totally belongs in the hall of fame. He was the best first baseman before he hurt his back. The stats back it up. Mattingly was a pure hitter. He would have had 3,000 hits if he didn't get hurt.

The fact that he played for 14 seasons with over 7000 at bat and batted .307 means he should be in the Hall. You forgot his career .996 fielding percentage at firstbase. I do think he'll get in there the only thing stopping him is the fact that he is the only really Yankee Great never to win a playoff series
