I fed mine some this morning thinking it wasn't going to be harmful, then I read today that potatoes are harmful to guinea pigs. I know there's a significant difference between sweet potatoes and potatoes, but still... I wanted to be sure.

No, it is not harmful to them. They are actually in most guinea pig foods (dried up) because it offers them a good vitamin C source that they need. They should be ok to feed but they aren't one of the common treats as listed...Just make sure they are no sprouted or still green--- However, regular potatoes should be avoided all together.

Here is a list of the more common treats and veggies/fruits for a guinea ( not them all but the most beneficial and common to be given fresh)-- don't expirament with the unknown, rather stick to the more defined veggies.

Carrot
Celery (be sure to cut into small pieces; the strings in celery are difficult to digest)
Cucumber
Lettuce (avoid iceberg lettuce- it is high in nitrates with little nutritional value)
Broccoli (small quantities only, as this can make them gassy)
Cauliflower and its leaves (small quantities only, as this can make them gassy)
Cabbage (small quantities only, as this can make them gassy)
Spinach
Green/Red/Yellow/Orange bell peppers (capsicum)
A variety of fruits including strawberries, oranges, melon, apple, banana, peaches, etc. (feed citrus in low quantities, because the acid can lead to mouth sores)

Sweet potatoes are good for them! High in Vitamin C which they need, and low in water content.
