Nissan is an abbreviation of the official name "Nippon Sangyo" ("Japan Industries"), under which the company was founded by Yoshisuke Aikawa in 1928. Until 1933, Nissan did not produce cars, but manufactured mainly vehicle parts. (As a side note, at the time Nissan also owned Hitachi.)

As to the the Jewish calendar, the month's name is spelled "Nisan", with one "s".

The name "Nissan" was an abbreviation used on the Tokyo stock market for the holding company Nippon Sangyo (Japan Industries or Nippon Industries), founded by Yoshisuke Aikawa in 1928. This company was the famous Nissan "Zaibatsu" (combine) which included Tobata Casting and Hitachi. At this time Nissan controlled foundries and auto parts businesses, but Aikawa did not enter automobile manufacturing until 1933. Reference: Cusumano pp 28, 30, 33.

The company originally traded under the name "Datsun". These cars we're well known for being reliable but had poor quality body work which often rusted.

They started using the name "Nissan" in the 80s after they had got their act together and produced cars with excellent engineering and bodywork, as people had associated the name "Datsun" with rusty cars.

Unfortunately, they are now owned by Renault. :(

The Nissan nameplate in the USA was once Datsun. Why it changed was, I assume, a corporate decision "made in Japan".

I don't; however Ni (or the same sound) means two. Mitsubishi means three diamonds! (Mitsu - three and bishi - diamond). Not an exact answer but may be some help!
