I have no dance experience and never was in a dance class for fun either. I want to join a dance class for exercise and to drop a few pounds. I was curious to know which type of dancing(ballet, jazz, modern, etc...) is more effective in terms of losing weight and getting tone. If you would please help me out.

ballet would be probably some of the hardest to do, especially if you're older, 'cause you need to turn out your feet from your hips more than a lot of other ones like jazz, modern, etc.
ballet's really elegant and stuff, jazz is more, like, "chick" retro, but both are extremely hard if you want to get really good at it. however, i think it's much easier to get the basics down for jazz than for ballet... ballet takes about 2-3 years before you can even START anything more than a single turn. both are really fun and are great for exercise, flexibility, balance, core strength, and lean muscle!

two good dances to learn is belly dancing and kick dancing. The former will really give your abs a work-out while the later will work on upper arms and leg strength. If you have the time, i would recommend both.

(besides, there are interesting side effects to belly dancing)

ballet!! did you know you use 99.9% of your muscles when doing ballet if you're dooing everything the teacher is telling you. and believe me if you really think about it aand take it seriously you will come out very sweaty and sore the next day wich means it is working. also ballet movements make your muscles long and slender not big and bulky so you get the tone a woman wants.

it doesn't matter if u don't have a dance experience. but if u want to learn a dance, play a Indian bhangra music and u will dance automatically. or u can do is stand up in front of the mirror and again play the DVD of punjabi bhangra, and try to copy the steps. u will learn the dance and at the same time u gonna lose your wait to. thanks

Did you ever consider ballroom? It is designed to be learned by adults, you don't have to be a little child in order to start and do well. If you noticed, competitive ballroom dancers carry a towel to their competition and practices. That's because ballroom is so much of a workout you need a towel to wipe your face between rounds. Social ballroom is good workout too and on top of that - it's social!

TAHITIAN is the best cardio workout you could ask for, plus it's tons of fun and you learn how to shake your booty really fast without being hoochie. I would look in to polynesian dance schools in your area... In one group you could do Tahitian for cardio, hula for strenghtening muscles, and drumming for rhythm!! It's more fun (and more discipline) than you would think, and a great way to stay in shape!
