I'm going with JFK for this one. He is remembered as one of the US's greatest presidents and yet the things most people associate him with (civil rights, actually making it to the moon) occured under the leadership of LBJ. LBJ is hated by most people in the US for vietnam (started under our darling Eisenhower's president and expanded by JFK) and no one recognized he glavnized a tramuatized nation into making hard changes and rising to the challenges put to America.

Henry Ford. In building his model 'T', and setting the world on a collision course with climate change is also credited with his one dollar a day to his workers. Only the very skilled on the assembly line got that. The rest, were were paid far less and were treated as badly as their counterparts in other factories. So, all this waffle about him being a beacon in American labour relations doesn't hold water.

There are actually quite a few. Here are two.
Albert Einstein- wife beater, cheat , carreer built off work passed off as his own. Yes this stuff about him is true- not rumors, look it up.

Thomas Edison- Ran a research 'sweat shop'. Took credit for the creation of everything that came out of it. One of the people he attempted to harness was the young genius Nikolai Tesla- Inventor of AC current and some hardware that makes it possible. Nikolai is one of the very few people who worked for edison that we still remember. He got away, but could never really get the kind of support for his work that guys like edison could- too idealistic.
I could list hundreds of people like this from politics, law, theology, business.... you name it.

Christopher Columbus (FTL)
Im not saying what he did was not great, but the fact that he is STILL credited with discovering America when he definitely did not made him jump out in my mind.
