Yes vampires do exist. One of the first vampires was Vladmir Dracula the Impaler. He was a very rich and powerful man in transylvania. He used to war with people and impale their bodies on stakes outside his extremely large estate to show the enemies how ruthless he is. He is also known to have had a form of tuberculosis that makes you thirst for blood.
There are modern vampires today in two forms ..the blood suckers and those who are spiritual vampires. The latter are more prominent. The blood suckers do exist but not as many and the poeople they bite dont become vampires. The people who are vampires have an insatiable thirst for blood and have people who they trust that htey can drink their blood.
They arent immortal or fly or anything like that though and they do need to eat regular food besides drinking blood because they cant survive on just someone elses blood and the human body will get sick on too much drank blood.

Whether their thirst is a result of a form of tuberculosis i dont know...but i do know they do exist.

You can mathematically disprove the traditional vampire tales quite simply. If being bitten by a vampire turns you into a vampire, and everyone you bite turns into a vampire, soon there would be nothing in the world but vampires--after all, not only you and the vampire who bit you need your blood meals, but so do all the new vampires you're making along the way.

Now, there are folks who can be a drain on your energy (auric vampires, if you will--I've known a few in my time!) and, of course, people who simply live off of others while making no contribution (the kind one of your other answerers referred to as "bloodsuckers"). But those are the only two kinds of vampire I can think of--apart from those who like to think of themselves as such, that are into sipping blood at gatherings (sorry, folks, the idea kind of grosses me out).

This site gives some incidents of vampires in the recent history. One such is as follows:

In the village of Blow, there was once a shepherd, who died for unknown reasons. Several days after his burial, he took to reappearing in his village and tormenting the people there. Anyone on whom he visited would die within 8 days. His case would be unremarkable, but for what happened next. Tired of his nightly ravishes, the villagers took the body from the grave-- finding it, of course, to be in a vampire state-- and they staked it through the heart and put it back in the grave. That night, the shepherd was again seen, and even angrier and more vicious than before. He now carried the stake in his hand, and he taunted that the stake made a good weapon to defend himself against the village dogs. The frightened people disinterred the body again and had it burned, finally ending the shepherd's deadly spree.

I knew one in LA. At least he thought he was a vampire and drank peoples blood. I think he still hangs out at Bar Sinister. I don't believe there are humans who are undead and require blood to survive though. At least not the ones who don't have that weird disease that requires them to get blood transfusions all the time.

There are plenty of people who drink blood, but they aren't vampires as we know them.

There is evidence of blood-drinking in Gothic subculture. As well, some tribes in Africa drink blood (goat's blood, I believe). Of course, any weirdo canibalists out there are drinking blood. And if you check out www.43things.com , there are a lot of weird people who are planning on drinking blood...you may want to stay away from them.
