I currently work for a non-profit 20 hours a week (most weeks 25). I am in college and taking 5 classes. I so freaking behind on my work and my grades are showing it. I took out a loan for school to pay for rent, school, other expenses. I also have a car payment. As time goes by, I am getting more and more on my plate at work and more and more on my plate at school. I feel like I need to work now so that I dont have as much debt later. But if I dont leave my job, then I will probably have to repeat the semester. My school is 12,000 a semester. I need some advice. A friend just told me (while I was writing this) to quit my job, focus on school and eat Ramen Noodles. She said no matter what I will be in debt. Please drop a line and let me know what you think. Thanks, any feedback is much appreciated.

Okay, based on personal experience here's what I think:
How important is your GPA? That is, will you need your GPA further down the line (to get into Grad school, for example) or are you going straight to the workforce?
Example from my life:
I wanted to go to grad school to get my master's degree. Obviously my GPA was very important and so I didn't work so I could focus on making sure my GPA and writing samples were perfection. Tada! I got into grad school and am now finishing up my master's.
My husband had no dreams of further education adn wanted to work as soon as possible. Employers very very rarely ask for your GPA in school. So...he concentrated instead on his full-time job knowing that the experience gained there was more important than the GPA. He just needed the diploma for credentials.
So basically...you have to ask yourself what your goals in life are and what's the easiest way for you to acheive those goals.
Oh and by the way...I ended up taking loans to pay for school which are now all coming due...OUCH!!!

if you quit your job where are you going to get money toeat - pay rent and your car payment?
if you don't pay your car payment you will have your car taken off you - you will get a bad credit rating and will find it very difficult to get a home loan ect
i understand where you are coming from - maybee u need to cut down your work hours or find another job which helps you prioritise your time a bit better - eg morning fill in a department store or suprmarket 5 days a week - it means you work in the morning before school - you go to school during the day and you have the evenings free for study and the weekend also - you pay your bills and eat as well. you might be tired but you are tired at the moment. I think you just need to shuffle your time around a bit better - find a different job............ school is important yes i agree but more important is eating every day and having a roof over your head. if you need to repeat - then you repeat, at least you will be a bit ahead the second year around - i dont think there is any shame in it.

I'm a mom, and 44 and have been in your shoes while I've been in college the last 2-1/2 years. My husband had to do most of the support for our family and we had to cut back on any luxuries just to meet the basic bills in our family. It hasn't been easy.
Here is the question that I asked myself when I was trying to decide between getting more hours at my part time job or concentrating on the studies...
In 5 years, which way will I be better off? By getting into a better paying job quicker by taking out more in student loans and taking a hit financially right now, or by making more money and delaying completing my education?
In my case, I concentrated on studies and got through school quicker. Because in 5 years, having the degree and getting into a better job helped me in the long run.

I would do what I have to do. If work is taking too much of your energy, then you have to quit. Don't you have family that you can go for a few meals here and there? You might want to down-size your debt load, by letting the car go. It might sound terrible, but reality sucks most of the time. Once your finished with school, and have your career, you can get and do as you please. Good-luck. It is nice to see dedication from such a young person. I wish you all the luck possible..

Quit your job, but find another job that is willing to work around your schedule. You have a car payment and other responsibiliies. Take charge, school is important, but you dont want to be without a car or anything else that you are paying on!

I would put your education first
Would you rather pay for college and then fail because you have a job? Or would you prefer to take out a loan, get through college and then find a career and pay back your loan

If you find that you job and work together is personally draining and overwhelming then you probably need to do something. Maybe you can get a job that isn't quite so much work or you just need to quit work altogether.
