Some say God allows evil so that we can be made strong. and that God isn't interested in humanities happiness but we are here on the earth to continue our "soulmaking." Suffering is good. Does anyone agree or disagree with this?

Strongly disagree.

1) evil doesn't make us stronger, but the harmony of good people. The motive could be to combat evil, or to express our creativity. Evil is not needed to grow.

2) If God created evil, all aspects of things he created would also have such contradictions. Nature works in greater harmony than selfish humans.

Evil is a more selfish pervertion of good. Our attitude can bring this world against the evil trend

Instead of providing you with some 1000+ word response, referencing the Bible, I will answer you with an event that we are all familiar with. You have probably guessed, what I am talking about is 9/11. Yes, it truly was evil at its most notorious moment, created by those who's purpose is to create terror/evil. Yet surprisingly, although this did shock our world, it made us stronger in many cases. Not only in a physical sense, (by that I mean increase in security especially during airplane flights) but most importantly it has strengthened us emotionally as a whole. What started out as a deliberate attempt to destroy the good of our world, has done the opposite and helped society, and forever will.

You know what they say....what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger...unless, of course, it maims or horribly disfigures you.

As others have pointed out, you don't need evil to make you strong; there are other pathways to personal growth. But surviving the crucible of evil -- a moral test or trial of sorts -- will certainly change your perspective, hopefully for the better.

That said, some evil is so bad that it seems to be gratuitous or overkill, such as children burning in a house fire...what's the point of that?? We can learn/grow just the same without that much suffering (I think).

If you believe in God, then you would be committed to the notion of soul-making, which requires adversity. Just like you can't know what light is without dark, you can't know what good is without at least a touch of evil.

Evil doesn't make anything. The same "evil" can make or break a person. It's ALL how the individual handles it within themselves.
BTW...SOME say "God allows..."?
The BIBLE says that God kicked Lucifer out of Heaven to rule the earth until His second coming. The second coming is compared to Sodom and Gomorrah. God had NO influence on anything that happened in those cities. As people had freedom of choice and chose to go bad, God then unleashed his wrath.
I have taken this to mean that God has NO influence and doesn't "allow" anything that happens here. So then everything must be of Satan. Satan allows "good" things to happen so as to subtly pull your attention from God.

I disagree. All this sophistry reminds me of Candide. "This is the best of all possible worlds". That statemen was an ironic criticism, yet xians spout this all the time.

What if everyone in the world had the compassion of Gandhi? Think about that. Still having the free will to choose god or not, yet with no desire to rape, rob, murder, etc... Would that world be so horrible? Why ISN'T the world like that? Would we really need a Hitler to teach us the opposite? Really?

In order to continue to entertain the evil intent, the mind is led to believe you are stronger. Continue to expend evil, and you wear yourself out.

suffering leads to discovery, life lessons and eventually evolution. but if we we're thought the basic right lessons from the beginning of our lives instead of being groomed to feel bad and fail then we wouldn't need to suffer.

Not evil, but overcoming adversity makes us stronger.
