I'm no wizard, but the first thing I always try when a peripheral is not working is to reload the device driver (from the manufacturers web-site) A floppy drive might be a problem, since you can't see it, it might be hard to know where to get the driver. The second thing is to make sure the device is getting power. Try cycling the power and see if the power indicator light works on the floppy.
A final thought: What can you possibly need a floppy drive for anymore??? (sorry, I realize that wasn't particularly helpful)

Maybe your floppy drive is broken. To check this, insert a disk on your floppy drive then go to Start Menu> Run and then type this without the quotes "a:"
if it is able to read or detect your floppy disk then it is working but if it is not able to detect it then you have to replace your floppy your floppy drive..

There are two possibilities: Hardware or software
Software: Does you floppy show up in 'Device manager' or just not in my computer? You may need drivers for it. Try uninstalling it and reinstalling it.
Hardware: Is your floppy plugged in correctly? If you checked software issues, then it is defective

If using win xp, go to CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER and see if it is listed under FLOPPY DISC CONTROLLERS. Does it have an exclamation mark on it?...from here there are alternative problems and corrections....if it is not listed you need to scan for hardware changes...to do this from device manager, click ACTION>HARD WARE CHANGES...then there may be other alternatives. (ask again)
