To look American . . . can be damn near anything.
To be American (and by American, I'm assuming you mean United States) means being a citizen of the country, either by being born here or being naturalized.
That's as wide sweeping as it gets. No other labels or descriptions can work for everyone.

Good question, I am Italian, born and raised here but everyone thinks I'm Jewish. You tell me what an American is suppose to look like. Are there really any true Americans? Besides the Native Americans which look ethnic anyway, so anyway I don't know the answer.

Baseball cap, sandalls with socks pulled up to knees, shorts pulled up around the belly with a large belt, hawaiian shirt and be twice as loud as the person you're speaking to.
